“PROTECT-IP is a bill that has been introduced in the Senate and the House and is moving quickly through Congress. It gives the government and corporations the ability to censor the net, in the name of protecting “creativity”. The law would let the government or corporations censor entire sites– they just have to convince a judge that the site is “dedicated to copyright infringement.”

The government has already wrongly shut down sites without any recourse to the site owner. Under this bill, sharing a video with anything copyrighted in it, or what sites like Youtube and Twitter do, would be considered illegal behavior according to this bill.

According to the Congressional Budget Office, this bill would cost us $47 million tax dollars a year — that’s for a fix that won’t work, disrupts the internet, stifles innovation, shuts out diverse voices, and censors the internet. This bill is bad for creativity and does not protect your rights.”

On Valentine’s Day, many people in today’s world feel compelled to get in a frenzy, whether it is because they don’t have a valentine present to give their loved one, or they don’t have a “Valentine” at all. The truth of the matter is that one should not get so upset or engaged in this holiday if they knew the history behind this ritualistic day! The Romans celebrated this day in the name of praise to the “God Lupercus” as young men drew names of young women from a basket which designated that match as the girl the young male would have rights to for the rest of that year as a sexual partner. This was a celebration that lasted 800 years prior to Pope Gelasius I in (496 AD) changing the whole concept of a “Valentine” and how it would be celebrated. It then became a draw of a particular “Valentine Saint” by both men and women which designated that Saint as one the person would emulate for the remainder of that year. There were many “Valentine Saints” that were Martyrs of the Christian faith. Pope Paul VI deleted this holiday from the Catholic calendar in 1969.  This holiday has been manipulated for various reasons over time, such as the Romans in the 14th century under the Roman Emperor Clausius II who ordered young men to remain single and dedicate themselves to his war by being in his army. It was during this time that the priest “Valentine” would secretly perform marriages for these young men. He was eventually prosecuted and put in Roman jail because of this. The first gift of affection acknowledged is that of a poem which was written for the anniversary of the engagement of King Richard II of England to Anne of Bohemia when a treaty had to be signed to allow them to marry at only 15 years old. This poem written by Geoffrey Chaucer, was about a bird choosing its mate and was entitled “Parlement of Foules” (1382). The earliest surviving “valentine” known was a poem written by Charles, the Duke of Orleans meant for his wife when he was imprisoned in London in the 15th century. It was a plea to his wife because during that time, there was a “High Court of Love” where the judges were selected by women and were based on “poetry readings” by the imprisoned due to betrayals, love contracts, and violence toward a woman.

As you can imagine, this holiday has been the driving force behind a mass marketing agenda for many countries. Next to Christmas, “Valentines Day” is the 2nd most annual exchange of cards in the U.S. and (85%) are bought and given by women.  This is why in Asia, (China, S. Korea, and Singapore) have adopted the holiday due to the amount of money spent on the export of their cards. It is quite interesting to note that there is a different meaning behind “Valentine’s Day” in some countries such as in Finland it is known as “Friend’s Day” and in Mexico, Costa Rica, Ecuador, and Iran it includes the love of the Earth and friendship. Saudi Arabia has banned this holiday as of (2002) due to its Christian history, although the Romans practiced this prior to Christianity for almost 800 years. In Malaysia, Islamic officials even warn Muslims that if they are caught in any way celebrating this day, they will be persecuted. The Islamic officials even go so far as to raid Hotel rooms to catch unlawful sexual conduct between couples.

With all of this being noted in history, why then does this day cause so much depression for both men and women? Probably because they never took the time to know the TRUTH behind the history of it all! So do not get so upset with such a materialistic and ever-changing holiday. How would you like it if your name was drawn in a box or basket to another person who then had the right to claim you sexually as their mate for the remainder of this year?
